To celebrate women’s international day we decided to brew a special beer in honor of the Women that helped shape the history (or β€œherstory”) of beer. This women are known as Brewsters, brewess and/or alewives.

Early Northern Europeans worshipped their beer goddesses as ancient Middle Easterners did, and before the second millennium, most European women drank and brewed beer For their families since it proved to be more sanitary than Water. Eventually this domestic activity became more commercial and men got more involved. With time brewsters weren’t just losing relevance. They were losing their dignity and their lives since a lot of them were prosecuted as witches. There are clear similarities between brewsters and what was described as a witch. Brewsters had their cauldrons (boiling kettle and bubbly fermentation), broomsticks: symbol of domestic trade that indicate availability of ale. They were surrounded by cats to chase away mice from the grain. And finally they used pointy hats to be seen above the crowd in the marketplace.

Alewive’s Golden is a Sweet, fruity and tart Ale with a spicy note characteristic of Belgian style beers and a balanced floral and fruit aroma. 7.5% alcohol and mild bitterness with a sparkling dry finish. With this beer we want to share that history and turn something negative into something very positive, honoring women in beer but also women in life.
